Leaders of Tomorrow - University of Otago

Established by the University of Otago Council in 2006 to assist students who have demonstrated all-round ability and who exhibit leadership potential to attend the University of Otago. More information here.

Polytechnic - Principal's Leadership Scholarship
Otago and Southland secondary school students enrolled in any study programme.
This scholarship is to be awarded to a student who has shown leadership inside or outside the school community.

Rotary Scholarship - Donated by Milton Rotary Club

Our local Rotary group offers a $2000 grant to someone going onto Tertiary education.  In early Term 4 applications normally open.

Tokomairiro High School Dux

DUX is awarded to the top of the school. Marks across all subjects are taken into account. There is a formula sheet available to students. Further information is available here.

NCEA Scholarship Exams

These are available in some subjects at Level 3 for students achieving at the higher levels. Discuss with your teacher of HOD or further information.

Special Awards for Senior Students at Tokomairiro High School

Note, these special awards do not come with money but are prestigious and worthy additions to your CVs.

Level 3 Jean Littlejohn Prize

The Jean Littlejohn Prize in Mathematics will go to the best student in Mathematics. They do not have to be studying both mathematics subjects. There is a separate prize fund for this award, so it means that usually the prize is of a higher value than other subject prizes.

Martin Cup

For achievement in the Arts at the senior level.  Awarded to the highest average across at least three Arts subjects (e.g. English, History, Art, Social Studies, Media Studies).  If no student at Y13 is suitable, it can be awarded at Y12.

Literary Award

For a student who has achieved a high standard for a published literary work.

Prize for Contribution to School Music

Senior - presented by the Earnshaw family. Awarded to the person who has best helped music in the school.  Decided by the HOD/TIC music; if necessary in consultation with other staff involved in music and productions.

Anderton Trophy for the Most Promising Musician -Decided by HOD Music in consultation with itinerant tutors where necessary (also open to Juniors). 

Dickinson (Senior boy & girl awards) Citizenship Trophies

Criteria

~ Among the highest scores weekly monitoring

~ Regarded as a positive role model/example of citizenship.

If there are no suitable candidates in any one year an award will not be made.

Whakatutuki Pono Maori Awards for Maori Achievement 

This award acknowledges the mana of maori students by their achievements, citizenship, leadership and participation. Recipients will be active participators in kaupapa maori organisations and events within Tokomairiro High School and the wider community. This award is decided upon and contributed to by Tokomairiro staff and members of Nga Whanau o Tokomairiro community group. Kotiri Korowai (girl)    Tama Mere (boy)

The Alice Baird Sustainability Trophy (not only senior/has often gone to a junior group)

Awarded each year to the individual or group within the school who most demonstrates sustainable living with the school and/or its community.

Sustainability is about meeting the needs of today without adversely impacting on the needs of tomorrow. It applies across a range of areas: society, the environment, and/or economy.

Brian Buschl Carpe Diem Award - making the most of opportunities

Ruth Robbins Community Service Award - outstanding contribution to the school and wider community

J B Roy Prize(Donated by the late J B Roy)

Awarded to the student [including head prefects] who best fulfills our school motto "Learning - Self Control and Courtesy".

They must ideally:

~ work hard at their studies [not necessarily be a top scholar]

~ be well behaved 

 ~ show consideration, courtesy and respect to people of all ages 

 ~ exhibit a special quality of integrity

 ~ contribution to the lives of other students.

 ~ show strong participation in some aspect of the whole life of the school;                   E.g. sport  and/or music, drama and/or cultural activity.

Academic Diligence Cup presented by the Whitworth family.

 Awarded at the Senior end of the school, preferably to a student in Year 13.  Only one award should be made. 

 The award is made to the person who has worked the hardest consistently throughout the year.
